New Orleans Saints’ Darren Sharper named NFC Player of the Week

The New Orleans Saints have proved they can win in more than one way, and it was their defense that won them their game Sunday against the New York Jets.  Darren Sharper led the way for the Saints’ defense and his great play was recognized by the league, as he was named the NFC Player of the Week.  In the win over the Jets, Sharper picked off Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez twice.  Sharper returned his first interception 99-yards for a touchdown, a Saint’s club record.  Sharper also led the team in tackles with eight.  Sharper is having a great year so far as he already has five interceptions (two of which he returned for touchdowns), 14 tackles, and five pass deflections.

Mike Bell has been electric for the New Orleans Saints

Mike Bell was outstanding this season as he replaced the injured Pierre Thomas.  But, he then got hurt himself and then Thomas returned and had a monster game.  So it’s likely back to the bench for Bell but the Saints have to feel really good about the depth situation at RB.  Bell has carried the ball 45 times for 229 yards (5.1 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He has also caught 1 pass for 9 yards this season.

Marques Colston appears to be back for the New Orleans Saints

Marques Colston was injured last season and he never seemed to get in rhythm with Drew Brees.  That’s not the case this season and the Saints are expecting a huge season from Colston.  He has caught 15 passes for 195 yards (13.0 avg) with 3 TD grabs this year.  Look for Colston to have a monster season as long as he can stay healthy as Brees has been looking for him early and often in games.

WR Robert Meachem is starting to step up for the New Orleans Saints

Robert Meachem was supposed to be the deep threat the Saints needed to play opposite of Marques Colston.  But, he just couldn’t handle the job or beat out Lance Moore or Devery Henderson.  He did however have a good game against the Lions to start the season.  He caught 2 passes for 51 yards (25.5 avg) and a TD against the Lions.  He also returned 6 kickoffs for 148 yards (24.7 avg) last Sunday.  The Saints re-signed Courtney Roby to return kickoffs despite Meachem’s showing last Sunday.  That means he will have to continue to improve at WR to get onto the field.
