Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20, New Orleans Saints 17 in OT

The Saints laid an egg after playing decent football for the first three quarters.  The Bucs scored 14 points in the 4th quarter to tie the game yesterday and then Connor Barth whacked a 47-yard field goal to beat the Saints in OT.  Drew Brees was very efficient yesterday completing 32 of 37 passes for 258 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs.  Pierre Thomas rushed for 60 yards on 6 carries (10.0 ypc) with a TD run before leaving the game due to injury.  Reggie Bush only carried the ball twice for 16 yards (8.0 ypc) but he also caught 6 passes for 37 yards (6.2 avg).  Marques Colston led the way in the passing game for the Saints yesterday with 8 grabs for 77 yards (9.6 avg).  Robert Meachem pitched in with 5 grabs for 66 yards (13.2 avg) with a TD grab.  The Saints finished up with 373 total yards on offense (124 rushing, 249 passing).

CB Malcolm Jenkins (10 tackles) and LB Johnthan Casillas (10 tackles, QB hit) led the way for the Saints on D yesterday.  Safety Darren Sharper also had a solid game with 7 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 2 passes defensed and 1 interception.  CB Tracy Porter pitched in with 6 tackles, 1 pass defensed and 1 interception.  The Buccaneers finished up with 439 total yards on offense (176 rushing, 263 passing) in this game.  But, as bad as the defense played the special teams really killed the Saints yesterday.  The Bucs’ Michael Spurlock scored on a 77-yard punt return for a TD with only 2:25 left in the football game.  Then Drew Brees took the team right down the field and Garrett Hartley missed a chip shot field goal sending the game into O.T. where the Saints lost the game.  The Saints are now 13-2 on the year.

The Saints fell behind 24-3 in the first three quarters before they started to show life in the 4th quarter but it was too little too late to keep their perfect season alive.  Drew Brees completed 29 of 45 passes for 298 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 INT.  But, he also lost two fumbles which really hurt the Saints last night.  Reggie Bush led the Saints in rushing despite only getting 1 carry (29 yards).  He also caught 2 passes for 17 yards (8.5 avg).  Pierre Thomas didn’t have his usual workload  either as he carried the ball 6 times for 20 yards (3.3 ypc) and he also caught 5 passes for 50 yards (10.0 avg).  Mike Bell pitched in with 8 yards rushing on 4 carries (2.0 ypc) with a TD run.  Marques Colston led the way in the passing game for the Saints last night with 5 grabs for 86 yards (17.2 avg).  TE David Thomas stepped up to grab 8 passes for 77 yards (9.6 avg) with Jeremy Shockey out due to injury.  The Saints finished up with 336 total  yards (65 rushing, 271 passing) on offense in this game as they only had possession of the ball for 23:34.

Jonathan Vilma led a poor effort by the Saints’ D with 14 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, 1 pass defensed, 1 sack and 2 QB hits.  Fellow linebacker Scott Fujita pitched in with 10 tackles and 1 QB hit and safety Darren Sharper pitched in with 10 tackles.  The Cowboys finished up with 439 total yards on offense (145 rushing, 294 passing) in this game.  The Saints are now 13-1 on the season.

New Orleans Saints 26, Atlanta Falcons 23

The Saints had a fight on their hands earlier today before Garrett Hartley kicked the eventual game winning field goal (38 yards) with 4:42 left in the game.  Drew Brees was outstanding as usual as he completed 31 of 40 passes for 296 yards with 3 TD passes and 0 INTs.  Mark Brunell threw one incomplete pass in this game.  Pierre Thomas was very busy in this game with 13 carries for 47 yards (3.6 ypc) and he also caught 6 passes for 53 yards (8.8 avg.).  Reggie Bush was also solid with 6 carries for 33 yards (5.5 ypc) and he also caught 6 passes for 46 yards (7.7 avg.) with 2 TD grabs.  Robert Meachem led the way in the passing game with 57 yards on 4 catches (14.3 avg).  Marques Colston pitched in with 6 catches for 54 yards (9.0 avg) with a TD grab.  The Saints finished up with 391 total yards on offense in this game (95 rushing, 296 passing) as they held onto the ball for 36:44.
CB Randall Gay led the way for the Saints today with 8 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and 1 pass defensed.  LB Jonathan Vilma pitched in with 7 tackles, 1 pass defensed and 1 interception.  The Falcons finished up with 392 yards in this game (89 rushing, 303 passing) so the Saints were lucky that they were hogging the ball.  The Saints are now a perfect 13-0 on the year.

New Orleans Saints 33, Washington Redskins 30 OT

Blogged under Big New Orleans Saints News,Bloglockers,Game Recaps by Andrew on Monday 7 December 2009 at 9:45 pm

The New Orleans Saints (12-0) almost had their undefeated season come to an end, as they narrowly escaped defeat against the Washington Redskins (3-9).  The Saints killed themselves with penalties, as seven of them amounted for 102 yards, but they did have a little bit of luck on their side.  At the end of the first half with the Redskins up 17-10, Drew Brees was intercepted by the Skins’ Kareem Moore, but on Moore’s return Robert Meachem made a great play by stripping Moore and returning it for a 44-yard touchdown to tie the game going into halftime.  Brees had a good game, throwing for 419 yards and 2 touchdowns on 35/49 passes.  He had to get a lot with the pass, as the Saints struggled to get their running game going finished with 55 rushing yards as a team.

The Saints defense did not do a very good job against a Washington Redskins team that has struggled all year.  They let Jason Campbell look more like Drew Brees, as he threw for 3 touchdowns and 367 yards on 30/42 attempts.  The one thing the Saints defense did do a good job of was forcing turnovers.  The defense recovered 2 fumbles and picked off Campbell once.  Without the turnovers they would have lost.  They also got some help from Skins’ kicker Shuan Suisham, who missed a 23-yard field goal attempt late in 4th quarter, which would have put the Skins up by 10.

New Orleans Saints 38, New England Patriots 17

The New Orleans Saints (11-0) made a big statement with their big win over the New England Patriots (7-4) Monday night.  The Saints pretty much proved they are the best team in football, as the undefeated Colts got an almost lucky one-point win over the Patriots a few weeks ago.  The Saints didn’t need luck and won by 20 more points than the Colts did against the Pats.  Drew Brees played the quarterback position about as good as you can play it against the Patriots, throwing for 371 yards and 5 touchdowns on 18/23 passes.  He completely outplayed Tom Brady, who finished with no touchdowns and 2 interceptions while only passing for 237 yards on 21/36 passes.  Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell ran the ball well for the running game, which was without the electric Reggie Bush.

The Saints offense were not the only ones to make a statement in this win, because the defense played great as well.  Not only did they keep Tom Brady out of the endzone and intercepted him twice, but they pretty much shut down Wes Welker.  Brady and Welker have been ripping apart secondaries, but the Saints held Welker to a season low 36 receiving yards on 6 catches.  They also held Randy Moss to only 3 catches.  The Pats did get 122 rushing yards as a team, but it was a good effort overall by the defense and the Saints have now proved they are playing at an elite level.

New Orleans Saints 38, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7

The Bucs scored first in this game and that appeared to piss the Saints off as they beat them up the rest of the game.  Drew Brees was very effective today completing 19 of 29 passes for 187 yards with 3 TD passes and 0 INTs.  Pierre Thomas was awesome today with 11 carries for 92 yards (8.4 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 11 yards (3.7 avg).  Mike Bell was also very effective for the Saints today with 13 carries for 75 yards (5.8 ypc) with 2 TD carries.  Marques Colston led the way in the passing game for the Saints with 5 grabs for 74 yards (14.8 avg).  Back up TE David Thomas also had a nice game with 4 catches for 66 yards (16.5 avg) with a TD grab.  WR Robert Meachem only caught 2 passes for 10 yards but they both went for TDs.  The Saints finished up with 370 total yards on offense (183 rushing, 187 passing) today.

The defense baffled rookie QB Josh Freeman and the Bucs’ offense today.  CB Malcolm Jenkins led the way for the Saints today with 7 tackles, 2 passes defensed and 1 interception.  Jonathan Vilma pitched in with 6 tackles, 1 pass defensed, 1 QB hit and 1 interception.  The Buccaneers finished up with only 219 total yards on offense (119 rushing, 100 passing) today.  The Saints are now 10-0 on the year.

New Orleans Saints 28, St. Louis Rams 23

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps by admin on Sunday 15 November 2009 at 6:56 pm

The Saints weren’t expecting a fight in St. Louis but that is exactly what they got.  Drew Brees was so-so in this game as he completed 18 of 26 passes for 223 yards with 2 TD passes and 2 interceptions.  Reggie Bush had by far his best game of the year for the Saints as he carried the ball 6 times for 83 yards (13.8 ypc) with 1 TD run and he also caught 2 passes for 15 yards (7.5 avg) with a TD grab.  Pierre Thomas pitched in with 37 yards rushing on 11 carries (3.4 ypc) today.  Devery Henderson led the way in the passing game for the Saints with 72 yards on 4 catches (18.0 avg).  Robert Meachem made a huge impact despite only touching the ball twice as he caught 1 pass for 27 yards and it went for a TD.  Meachem also carried the ball 1 time for 41 yards today.  The Saints finished up with 420 total yards on offense (203 rushing, 217 passing) in this game.

Roman Harper (8 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 pass defensed) and Jonathan Vilma (8 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss) led the way for the Saints on D in the game today.  The Rams finished up with 434 total yards on offense (141 rushing, 293 passing) in this game.  KR Courtney Roby also had a huge impact in this game for the Saints as he returned 3 kickoffs for 146 yards (48.7 avg) including 1 that he returned 97 yards for a TD.  The Saints are now 9-0 on the year.

New Orleans Saints 30, Carolina Panthers 20

Blogged under Big New Orleans Saints News,Bloglockers,Game Recaps by Andrew on Tuesday 10 November 2009 at 5:47 pm

The New Orleans Saints (8-0) got their third straight comeback win as they were able to fight back from a 17-3 deficit against the Carolina Panthers (3-5) to stay undefeated.  The Panthers came ready to play and were quickly up 14-0 after the first quarter.  The Saints could not contain the Panthers’ running back DeAngelo Williams early in this one.  Williams put the Panthers up very early when he broke out for a 66-yard touchdown run early in the first.  He added another first quarter touchdown about seven minutes later and the Saints looked a little shocked.  They were able to get a few field goals in the second quarter and found themselves down 17-6 at halftime.  They finally woke up in the second half though, putting up 24 points and holding the Panthers to only a third quarter field goal.

Although the Saints defense did not do a good job overall stopping the run, giving up 182 rushing yards, they made plays when it mattered most.  Late in the game with the Saints up only three, Thomas Morstead made a great punt which Malcom Jenkins dove and kept the ball out of the endzone.  The Panthers got the ball on their own 1-yard line and the Saints’ Anthony Hargrove made the play of the game.  He stripped DeAngelo Williams and recovered it for a game sealing touchdown.  The offense didn’t have a monster game, but Drew Brees did throw for a touchdown and 330 yards on 24/30 attempt.  He did throw one pick, but he and receiver Robert Meachum had great chemistry, hooking up five times for 98 yards and a touchdown.  They got a combined 67 yards on 18 carries from Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush, including a Thomas touchdown early in the third quarter.  After this win this Saints team became the first in franchise history to go 8-0.  The Saints have never been to the Super Bowl, but it looks like this might be their year.

New Orleans Saints 35, Atlanta Falcons 27

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps by admin on Tuesday 3 November 2009 at 9:04 am

The Saints held off the pesky Falcons last night on Monday Night Football.  Drew Brees was very effective as he completed 25 of 33 passes for 308 yards with 2 TD passes and 1 interception.  Brees moved the ball around to 8 different receivers in this game so that the Falcons couldn’t really double team anyone.  All was not good for Brees however as he did lose a fumble that was returned 4 yards for a TD by DE Kroy Biermann of the Falcons.  Pierre Thomas led the way on the ground for the Saints in this game with 91 yards rushing on 14 carries (6.5 ypc) with 1 TD run.  Mike Bell also did some heavy lifting in this game with 17 carries for 49 yards (2.9 ypc).  Marques Colston led the way for the Saints in the passing game with 6 catches for 85 yards (14.2 avg) with a TD grab.  TE Jeremy Shockey pitched in with 5 catches for 72 yards (14.4 avg) in this game.  The Saints finished up with 437 total yards on offense (146 rushing, 291 passing).

Safety Roman Harper led the way for the Saints on D in this game with 8 tackles.  Jabari Greer, Tracy Porter and Darren Sharper each picked off a Matt Ryan pass in this game.  Greer returned his pickoff 48 yards for a TD right at the end of the first half.  The Falcons finished up with 442 total yards (161 rushing, 281 passing) in this game.  The Saints are now 7-0 on the season.

New Orleans Saints 46, Miami Dolphins 34

Blogged under Big New Orleans Saints News,Bloglockers,Game Recaps by Andrew on Monday 26 October 2009 at 8:45 pm

The New Orleans Saints (6-0) looked like they were going to get their first loss of the season against the Miami Dolphins (2-4), but Drew Brees led the Saints to an exciting comeback.  The Saints were down 34-24 heading into the fourth quarter, after the Dolphins and their great running game controlled the game.  The Dolphins had built a 24-3 lead in the second quarter but the Saints were able to cut the lead down to 24-10, after a gutsy call for Drew Brees to QB sneak from the one-yard line payed off with 2 seconds left in the half.  Darren Sharper started the half off great for the Saints, picking off Chad Henne and returning it 42 yards for a touchdown.

The game turned into a shootout late in the 3rd quarter.  The Saints offense was able to continue that play into the 4th quarter, and the Dolphins were not.  They were too much for the Dolphins to handle, as they had three touchdowns and a field goal in the 4th quarter, while the Dolphins were held scoreless in the final quarter and the Saints held on for the win.  Drew Brees had uncharacteristic three interception game, but he never lost his confidence and led them to the win.  They got a lot of production out of the running game with Mike Bell and Pierre Thomas combining for 110 yards on 20 carries (5.5 avg), as well as Reggie Bush adding 10 yards and a touchdown on three carries.  The Saints finally looked human in this game, but they showed their resiliency and proved they can come from behind to win.  They are at home against the Atlanta Falcons next game.
