Robert Meachem is stepping up for the New Orleans Saints

Robert Meachem is finally starting to show why the Saints drafted him so high a couple of years ago.  He has played in 13 games for the Saints this season and he has caught 33 passes for 601 yards (18.2 avg) with 8 TD grabs.  He has also carried the ball 5 times for 75 yards (15.0 ypc) so far this season.  Meachem pitches in on special teams for the Saints when the need arises as he has returned 6 kickoffs for 148 yards (24.7 avg).  He also made a huge play against the Redskins were he forced a fumble, recovered it and returned it for a TD.  He is really turning into a asset for the Saints in 2009.

The tight ends have been a very important part of the offense for the New Orleans Saints this season.  Jeremy Shockey, David Thomas and Darnell Dinkins have combined to catch 71 passes for 825 yards (11.6 avg) with 6 TD grabs so far this season.  Shockey is the main man of this group as he has caught 48 passes for 569 yards (11.9 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  David Thomas has been really effective also despite being #2 on the depth chart as he has caught 22 passes for 254 yards (11.5 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  Darnell Dinkins is only usually used in goal line situations and short yardage situations as he is a good blocker.  He has only caught 1 pass for 2 yards but it went for a TD.  Look for the Saints to use the TEs a lot tomorrow if the Cowboys are blitzing a lot.

The Saints had a fight on their hands earlier today before Garrett Hartley kicked the eventual game winning field goal (38 yards) with 4:42 left in the game.  Drew Brees was outstanding as usual as he completed 31 of 40 passes for 296 yards with 3 TD passes and 0 INTs.  Mark Brunell threw one incomplete pass in this game.  Pierre Thomas was very busy in this game with 13 carries for 47 yards (3.6 ypc) and he also caught 6 passes for 53 yards (8.8 avg.).  Reggie Bush was also solid with 6 carries for 33 yards (5.5 ypc) and he also caught 6 passes for 46 yards (7.7 avg.) with 2 TD grabs.  Robert Meachem led the way in the passing game with 57 yards on 4 catches (14.3 avg).  Marques Colston pitched in with 6 catches for 54 yards (9.0 avg) with a TD grab.  The Saints finished up with 391 total yards on offense in this game (95 rushing, 296 passing) as they held onto the ball for 36:44.
CB Randall Gay led the way for the Saints today with 8 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and 1 pass defensed.  LB Jonathan Vilma pitched in with 7 tackles, 1 pass defensed and 1 interception.  The Falcons finished up with 392 yards in this game (89 rushing, 303 passing) so the Saints were lucky that they were hogging the ball.  The Saints are now a perfect 13-0 on the year.

New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons

The first time these two teams played the Saints had to fight tooth and nail before finally prevailing 35-27 at home.  But, the Falcons had a healthy Matt Ryan and Michael Turner in that game.  If either of them play this week they will be gimpy.  With that in mind the Saints should come out throwing the ball to force the Falcons into a firefight.  Drew Brees should have a field day throwing against a Falcons’ D that is allowing 254.7 yards passing per game.  If the Saints succeed in getting the lead in the passing game then they can grind out the game on the ground with Pierre Thomas leading the way against a Falcons’ D that is allowing 119.8 yards rushing per game and 4.3 yards per carry.

The Falcons will no doubt come out running the football with Jason Snelling and Jerious Norwood against a Saints’ D that is allowing 113.9 yards rushing and 4.5 yards per carry.  The Saints must stop the running game of the Falcons to force Chris Redman into making some mistakes like he did last weekend against the Eagles.  The Saints should double cover Roddy White and make the Falcons use other receivers to try to beat their defense.

PREDICTION:  SAINTS 33, FALCONS 17

The New Orleans Saints want perfection this season

The Saints have gotten through 3/4 of the 2009 season undefeated and they want to finish the deal.  With 16-0 being the goal for the regular season the Saints will have to quit making so many mistakes especially on defense.  Still, Drew Brees and the offense are averaging 429.0 total yards on offense so far this season which has covered for the defense.  The toughest game left for the Saints will be next week when they play the Cowboys at home.  The Falcons, Buccaneers and Panthers are the other three remaining games for the Saints and they have outscored them by a combined 103-54 already this year.  Greatness is there for the Saints to grab and I have a feeling that they will be undefeated going into the playoffs.
