The battle between Martin Gramatica and rookie Tyler Mehlhaff went right down to the wire.  The Saints decided to release Mehlhaff and make Gramatica the starting kicker.  Gramatica connected on all four of his field goals and all four of his extra points this preseason.  Mehlhaff connected on 2 of 3 field goals and all 4 of his extra point attempts.  The Saints will likely keep Mehlhaff’s number on speed dial in case something happens to Gramatica but this was still the right move for the Saints to make.

The Saints have released QB Tyler Palko after deciding to go with only 2 QBs.  He was beaten out by the ancient Mark Brunell.  Palko played in all 4 games in the preseason for the Saints and he completed 23 of 46 passes (50%) for 309 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 interception (69.9 QB Rating).  He also carried the football 6 times for 17 yards (2.8 ypc).  But he lost two fumbles and doesn’t have the strongest arm around so the Saints are confident that they won’t miss him.

The New Orleans Saints have placed rookie WR Adrian Arrington on the Injured Reserve List ending his season due to a case of turf toe.  Arrington caught 2 passes for 46 yards (23.0 avg) in the preseason for the Saints.  Arrington would have had a hard time making the Saints due to the depth that they have at WR this season.  At least Arrington will get paid this season which is good for him.
