Saints give away game in early stages and lose 35-22

To put in simply…..the Ravens kicked the Saints butt!  Drew Brees completed 24 of 45 passes for 383 yards with 3 TDs and 3 INT (two of which were returned for TDs)!  Reggie Bush injured himself in the game, but really didn’t do much before he got hurt, carrying the ball 5 times for 16 yards.  Deuce McAllister only carried the ball 5 times for 11 yards.  Rookie WR Marques Colston had another big game, catching 6 passes for 163 yards and 2 TDs.  Joe Horn caught 5 passes for 126 yards and a TD.  TE Mark Campbell chipped in 4 catches for 42 yards.

Safety Omar Stoutmire led the way on defense with 11 tackles.  The Ravens ran the ball 39 times for 137 yards (3.5 ypc) against the Saints.  The Ravens completed 17 of 23 passes for 156 net yards passing.

The Saints need to play better than this if they have any plans on making the playoffs.

Saints by the numbers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Thursday 26 October 2006 at 4:35 pm

The Saints offense has been flying high and is averaging 24.2 points per game.  The Saints are averaging 108.8 yards rushing per game, but only 3.7 yards per carry.  The passing game has been excellent, averaging 245.3 net yards passing and 66.3% completions.

The defense is a different story however, allowing 18.3 points per game.  The Saints are allowing 119.7 yards rushing per game and 4.9 yards per carry…..that will need to improve if the Saints want to keep winning!  The Saints have been decent against the pass, allowing 189.5 net yards passing per game and 57.0% completions.

Saints vs. Ravens

Blogged under Front Page,This Week's Matchup by ravenhater on Wednesday 25 October 2006 at 11:07 am

The Ravens and the Saints have been huge surprises in the NFL so far this season.  This should be a very interesting game.

Who knows what the Ravens will do on offense with Billick now calling the plays.  I look for the Ravens to try to power the ball in the running game against the Saints.  The Saints defense is having a rough time stopping the run, allowing 119.7 yards rushing per game and 4.9 yards per carry.  Look for Jamal Lewis (352 yards rushing) to have a big game.  As soon as the Saints defense creeps up, look for the Ravens to take a few shots down the field to Derrick Mason (23 rec, 310 yards) and Mark Clayton (25 rec, 287 yards).  TE Todd Heap will give the safeties and linebackers of the Saints a rough time.

Look for the Saints to mix it up on offense to try to keep the Ravens defense off-balance.  Deuce McAllister (444 yards rushing) and Reggie Bush (196 yards rushing) have done well this season, but the Ravens defense is only allowing 71.2 yards rushing and 2.7 yards per carry…..so every yard will be a tough one.  The Saints O-Line has only allowed 6 sacks this season, but they will have to play well this week against the aggressive blitzing tactics that the Ravens employ that already has 19 sacks!   When Brees does have time, he will have to be careful throwing the ball downfield, because the Ravens already have 11 INTs.

It’s hard for me to pick a winner in this game, but the SuperDome has been a magical place for the Saints….so I think they have a little edge in this game.

Saints lose starting TE for several weeks

TE Ernie Conwell will miss several weeks after undergoing knee surgery.  Mark Campbell will start in Conwell’s place until he returns.

I’m sure the Saints would rather play this week

The Saints bye week is here and they are an unbelievable 5-1 this season.  The Saints have done it with great offensive play and just enough defense.  The Saints are averaging 24.2 points per game this season.  The Saints are averaging 108.8 yards rushing per game, but only 3.7 yards per carry.  Drew Brees and company are lighting teams up when they throw the ball.  They are averaging 245.3 net yards passing per game and are completing and outstanding 66.3% of their passes!

The Saints defense is starting to show cracks.  The Saints are allowing teams to run for 119.7 yards per game and 4.9 yards per carry, and that needs to improve if they are to continue winning football games.  The Saints allow 189.5 yards passing per game and 57.0% completions.  They really need to work on the defense to keep winning.

Saints linebacking crew playing tough

Maybe all the Saints linebackers just needed an opportunity to start.  They were all back-ups that the Saints traded for.  OLB Scott Fujita has been making big plays this season.  Fujita has 41 tackles, 3 sacks and 2 interceptions this season!  The other OLB is Scott Shanle who has played well.  Shanle has 36 tackles and 2 sacks.  MLB Mark Simoneau has been solid and has 29 tackles.

Saints win magical as they win on last second FG 27-24

I’m finally starting to believe that the Saints are for real. They never say die, no matter what is happening in the game. You could just see it in Drew Brees eyes that the Saints were winning this football game. Brees led a good drive at the end of the game to set John Carney up for the game-winning FG. Brees completed 27 of 37 passes for 275 yards with 3 TDs and 2 INT. Deuce McAllister carried the ball 12 times for 64 yards (5.3 ypc) and caught 6 passes for 36 yards. Reggie Bush carried the ball 11 times for 25 yards (2.3 ypc) and caught 4 passes for 35 yards. WR Joe Horn had his best game in over a year catching 6 passes for 110 yards and 2 TDs. Rookie Marques Colston caught 4 passes for 40 yards and a TD.

LB Scott Fujita led a defense that played just good enough to win. Fujita had 7 tackles, 1 pass defensed and an interception. The Saints allowed the Eagles to rush for 99 yards on 19 carries (5.2 ypc). The Eagles completed 19 of 32 passes for 226 net yards passing.

This was a great win for the Saints, who seem un-beatable at home so far.

Saints vs. Eagles

Blogged under Front Page,This Week's Matchup by ravenhater on Thursday 12 October 2006 at 3:05 pm
The Philadelphia Eagles have been putting on an awesome offensive display so far this season averaging 417.8 yards per game and 31 points per game.  The Saints are a surprising 4-1, due to their overall good play in all facets of the game.

Last week the Tampa Bay Bucs exposed some cracks in the Saints defense.  The Saints are vulnerable to teams that run the ball as they’ve given up 123.8 yards rushing per game and 4.9 yards per carry.  The Eagles offense isn’t built to run the ball, but I’m sure Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter will get some shots against the weak line-backing crew of the Saints.  Look for Westbrook out of the backfield to cause all kinds of trouble for the Saints linebackers.  Donovan McNabb is having a stellar season to date, as he has thrown for 1,611 yards with 11 TDs and 1 INT.  McNabb has been spreading the ball around as five receivers have caught at least 11 passes and six receivers have at least 172 yards receiving.  I look for TE LJ Smith to have a huge game against the Saints safeties.

The Saints will come out running the football.  Deuce McAllister (380 yards rushing) and Reggie Bush (170 yards receiving) will challenge the linebackers of the Eagles from the get go.  The Eagles do a decent job defending the run, allowing 104.8 yards per game and 3.7 yards per rush.  Look for Drew Brees to also attack the Eagles defense with short passes to Reggie Bush (34 rec, 250 yards).  The Eagles outside linebackers must contain Bush on the outside.  If the Saints offensive line can control the Eagles pass rush, then Brees will take some deep shots to rookie Marques Colston (23 rec, 374 yards) and Joe Horn.  The Saints have only allowed 6 sacks this season and the Eagles defense already has 23 sacks this season.

I have to side with the Eagles here.  The Eagles defensive line will be too much for the Saints to handle.
